Staining Tips

  • The coarser the finish sandpaper used, the darker the stain color will be

  • Always wipe satins after application to assure good adherence of the finish coats

  • When staining hard woods like maple to obtain more uniform stain penetration, try finish sanding before staining, with 80-grit sandpaper.

  • To produce dark colors such as mahoganies and walnuts, it requires a two-step staining operation. The first coat should be a dye type stain like MLC Microton. The second coat would be a MLC Spray & Wipe stain. This system will obtain the walnut or mahogany color desired even on light colored woods like oak and maintain excellent grain definition.
