When
staining hard woods like maple to obtain more uniform stain
penetration, try finish sanding before staining, with 80-grit
sandpaper.

To
produce dark colors such as mahoganies and walnuts, it requires a
two-step staining operation. The first coat should be a dye type
stain like MLC Microton. The second coat would be a MLC Spray &
Wipe stain. This system will obtain the walnut or mahogany color
desired even on light colored woods like oak and maintain excellent
grain definition.
